International “Pay It Forward” Day

It began as a novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde, which blossomed into a motion picture. “Pay It Forward” has now earned an international day of recognition. Today, April 29, is International Pay It Forward Day.

The premise of “Pay It Forward” is to perform acts of kindness to three people. The kindness should be relative to the need of that person. You then ask them to do an act of kindness for three other people whom they know to be in need - and in doing so, exponentially produce acts of good will toward people far beyond your personal experience. The point is to try and make a positive difference in someone’s life.

You are one person in this world, but it’s possible that by reaching out to just one other person, you may increase their world. Your example of giving from the heart can be very powerful, enriching someone else’s life for the moment or for a lifetime.

It needn’t be a large, overt act. Simple things like a note of encouragement, paying toward the coffee order of the person on line behind you or mowing someone’s (not necessarily a neighbor’s) lawn can be touching. Be aware of your surroundings and look for ways to be creative in your giving.

And who knows how far your giving will reach? With 15 countries around the world participating in this powerful day of giving, the possibilities are endless.

And certainly don’t feel confined to April 29, 2010. By all means, make your giving a daily happening. At the very least, you can offer a friend or a stranger your warm smile, and for all you know, you’ve made their day, week, month, year - or  their life. Go ahead, you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain, knowing you helped someone in need.

EPA Signs Sustainability Agreement With Major New Jersey Company

Hartz Mountain Industries, Inc., New Jersey’s largest real estate development company, has signed an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to cut energy and water use and to take other steps to reduce the environmental impacts of its retail and commercial properties across the state. Buildings are responsible for close to half of the nation’s greenhouse gas pollution. Under the agreement, signed on March 11, Hartz will take steps to promote sustainability in its operations.
